Reading Passports

I attempted to use these last year, however, the idea came around the same time as end of grade testing.  I plan on using these right off the bat.  These are some stories off the top of my head that seem to be hits for social studies integration with reading.

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes
Turtle Bay
Nate the Great and the San Fransisco Detective
The Table Where Rich People Sit
Almost to Freedom
Where the Red Fern Grows
A River Ran Wild
Expedition Down Under

  1. Neat idea! You listed some wonderful stories; thank you. I wonder if there is a database of great stories online that take place in other locations. I think it is SO important to know where another place is in relation to home. Yet I thought... are you using the sheet for the story about San Francisco? It says "country" on it, so I wondered if a student would be confused. Maybe go for some sheets with "Things that are different in this state", too.

  2. I have a bunch of social studies integration book titles somewhere at school. When I find that list, I'll post them. With stories like Nate the Great, A River Ran
Wild, Red Fern and others I might have the students list the country as United States. I like your idea about things that are different... thanks:) If you want the word document, I'll be glad to email it to you so you can tweak it for your class.
